Netflix‘s Jamie Foxx film They Cloned Tyrone receives rave reviews, earning some of the streamer’s highest praise for a sci-fi movie.

They Cloned Tyrone, directed by Juel Taylor, is about an unusual trio (Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris) who stumble onto a deadly government cloning plot. The film had a limited theatrical release on July 14 and is available on Netflix as of July 21.

Reviewers have praised the film’s humor while also giving it high scores for performance, with all three protagonists garnering praise. Robert Daniels from New York Times writes, “They Cloned Tyrone also stands firmly on its glossy style — the evocatively smoky John Carpenter-esque cinematography and the Blaxploitation-inspired costumes — and its spirited performances.”

While IndieWire‘s Christian Zilko says, “The winning cast allows Taylor to exploit the formula that the Coen brothers have made careers out of: watching lovable dimwits investigate a mystery that they’re completely unqualified to solve is always a blast.”

Amon Warmann from Empire calls the film “stylish” and says it is “laugh-out-loud blast that has something to say but doesn’t sacrifice enjoyment to do so, anchored by a trio of great performances.”

Jordan Hoffman from The Messenger thinks, “If the blend of sci-fi and comedy with an examination of a community’s woozy feelings toward the broader culture weren’t enough, the picture also looks great.”

Twitter Reactions

Fans on Twitter are also praising the Netflix original film. They’re giving the film a 5 out of 5, praising Jamie Foxx, its costume design, cinematography, and music, and promising that its hilariously quotable phrases will make their way into the current language.

Despite the current buzz around Barbie and Oppenheimer, some of them are pushing people to see the film.

They Cloned Tyrone is a critical favourite by Netflix standards, with a score of over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, which reflects positively on the efforts of the film’s director and cast.
