Studio Ghibli has finally unveiled The Boy and the Heron trailer, Hayao Miyazaki’s latest and most likely last film.

The studio made an unprecedented move by keeping all details about their latest film under wraps until its July 14th Japanese theater release. They surprised fans with the first-ever teaser trailer outside Japan, and just recently, they shared some first images. GKIDS also treated English-speaking audiences to a “pre-teaser” introducing the film’s story.

The Boy and the Heron’s official synopsis reads: “A young boy names Mahito longing for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.”

This film, marking Miyazaki’s return after a decade since The Wind Rises in 2013, has already dominated the Japanese box office. It also stands as Studio Ghibli’s first feature since 2020’s CG film Earwig and the Witch, directed by Hayao’s son, Goro Miyazaki.

The Ghibli movie will be released in the United States in both its original Japanese with English subtitles and a new English-language version. In addition to Takuya Kimura, Aimyon, Kô Shibasaki, Yoshino Kimura, Shôhei Hino, and Jun Kunimura, the Japanese voice cast features Soma Santoki as Mahito and Masaki Suda as the Grey Heron. An English dub is currently in the works.
