Kelsey Grammer Rules Out Possibility of Returning to Cheers on Frasier

Kelsey Grammer dismisses the possibility of Frasier reconnecting with the familiar faces of the hit NBC sitcom Cheers.

Paramount+‘s revival sees Grammer’s titular character returning to Boston, where he previously spent a decade frequenting barstools on Cheers. However, in a recent interview with Variety, Grammer dashes any hopes of Frasier revisiting the old gang, putting a damper on the potential crossover.

“I don’t think we should do that,” he says. “We don’t want to desecrate a national monument. I’m not sure how we can have it live up to anything but a desecration.” He further emphasizes that the choice to refrain from revisiting is a tribute to the immense respect they hold for the original Cheers series. “I think we honor it by excluding it.”

In the revived series, Frasier and his friends now gather at a Boston bar named Mahoney’s, a poignant tribute to John Mahoney, Grammer’s co-star on the original Frasier, who passed away in 2018.

Grammer is accompanied by a completely new ensemble cast, featuring Jack Cutmore-Scott in the role of his son Freddy. While Cheers and Frasier director James Burrows returned to direct the first two episodes of the revival, Bebe Neuwirth also made a return, reprising her role as Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith in a recent episode.
