Jeremy Allen White holds a certain disapproval for the current Hollywood trend, where emerging talents are swiftly picked up by Marvel or DC.
In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, The Bear star noted that it seems whenever a young actor gains significant popularity in pop culture, they are promptly recruited by either Marvel or DC to become part of a superhero film franchise.
“I had a meeting for a kind of Marvel-y movie, and I had an attitude,” White says. “I think I played it all wrong.”
White was skeptical, and showed it in front of the execs. “‘Tell me about why should I do your movie.’ They were like, ‘Fuck you.’ And I was like, ‘Right on.’”
White voiced his skepticism regarding superhero movies. “They get really good filmmakers to do those movies and obviously they get really good actors to do those movies. I played it the way I wanted to play it.”
White has conveyed his strong interest in making the kind of “$25 million drama” that many actors aspire to work on, a genre that seems to be on the decline due to the dominance of Marvel’s superhero movies. Nevertheless, he’s in a position to pursue one of the rare films in this category that still get produced.
Jeremy’s new film Fingernails is streaming on Apple TV+.
