What’s the Story of Fingernails?
Fingernails has been described as a “grounded sci-fi love story,” offering a glimpse into the near future. In this intriguing world, a groundbreaking test has emerged, capable of measuring the authenticity of love between couples. This discovery has led to the emergence of so-called “love institutes,” aimed at helping couples nurture their relationships.
In the film, Anna finds herself at a crossroads, uncertain if her current partner, Ryan, is the one. Seeking answers, she takes a job at an institute specializing in using fingernail scans to determine the compatibility of couples, hence the film’s intriguing title, Fingernails. At the institute, she crosses paths with Amir, setting the stage for a captivating tale of relationship dynamics. Despite the test results indicating a strong match between Anna and Ryan, Anna can’t help but feel a traditional, electric connection with Amir, igniting a romantic spark that adds a layer of complexity to the story.
Director Christos Nikou told Vanity Fair that the film explores, “how difficult it is for people to fall in love right now – especially through the extensive use of social media and of all these apps.”
