DCU’s Blue Beetle Receive Rave Reviews from Critics

The first reactions for Blue Beetle on social media continue to pour in, with members of the press weighing in on the DCU film.

Angel Manuel Soto directs the new film, which follows Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduea), who develops superpowers after interacting with an extraterrestrial scarab. It’s DC’s first picture centered on a Latino superhero, and it’s the second-to-last project from DC’s old guard before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over.

As Blue Beetle approaches its theatrical release, early screenings have been held to allow members of the press to see the latest DC adventure in advance. According to them, the movie is a surprisingly great superhero origin story with a winning performance by actor Mariduea with plenty of heartfelt, humor, and a embracing the Latin culture.

Jane N. Nagase said she had “so much fun watching” Blue Beetle, noting that the leading actors Mariduea and Bruna Marquezine’s “chemistry is unreal.”

Griffin Schiller highlighted the film as a unique and charming reimagining of the classic origin narrative. He also praised Mariduea for skillfully grounding this personal and captivating exploration of family and one’s true calling within the realm of synthwave.

Originally set for HBO Max as part of DC’s movie lineup, Blue Beetle was later planned as the debut DCU character film, with Superman being confirmed as the first full DCU movie by Gunn on the Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast.

Blue Beetle releases on Aug. 18.
