Marisa Abela Stars as Amy Winehouse in Trailer for Biopic Back to Black

The first trailer for Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black featuring Marisa Abela as iconic late singer, was released.

The teaser provides sneak peeks of Abela captivating audiences, evading paparazzi pursuits, and recording the titular track for the film. “I don’t write songs to be famous,” she says in the trailer. “I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t.”

“‘Back to Black’ is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, ‘Back to Black,” the logline reads. “Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”

Jack O’Connell stars as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Eddie Marsan as Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, with Juliet Cowan as Winehouse’s mother, Janis Winehouse-Collins. Lesley Manville plays Winehouse’s grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse.

Back to Black is the first biopic centered around Winehouse, renowned for her hit songs such as Valerie, Back to Black, and Rehab. Following the singer’s passing in 2011 at the age of 27 due to alcohol poisoning, various documentaries have surfaced, exploring her life and enduring impact. Notable examples include the 2015 Oscar-winning documentary feature Amy and the 2021 BBC TV film Reclaiming Amy.

The new biopic is directed by filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson.
