Marvel Studios knows how to keep us on the edge of our seats. After the fantastic releases of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we will have the last MCU movie of 2023. Carol Danvers will once go on a cosmic adventure along with Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau in The Marvels.

MCU officially blessed us with the news about the sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), back in July 2019. It didn’t take long for the wheels of production to start turning in early 2020. This movie is tightly knit with the Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion Disney+ series.

Just to jog your memory, Phase Four went out with a bang thanks to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s tremendous box office success. Phase Five of the MCU kicked off in 2023 with Ant-Man 3, where MCU villain Kang the Conqueror made his grand entrance as the Multiverse Saga’s big bad. The Marvels, the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is a part of Phase Five.

Now, let’s break down The Marvels for you, so you’re totally in the loop on the latest MCU excitement!

When is The Marvels Release Date?

The Marvels is set to hit theaters on November 10, 2023. Originally slated for July 8, 2022, and later November 11, 2022, it found its place in 2023 with a February 17 release date. However, due to strategic scheduling adjustments, it was moved to July 28, 2023, and eventually settled on November 10. This date has become even more appealing for Disney, especially with the delay of Dune 2 to 2024. It’s the MCU’s shortest-ever film, an hour and forty-five minutes long.

What is The Marvels Plot?

The Marvels movie will connect the dots between our trio of heroes and set the stage for some serious sleuthing. Carol and Monica go way back, but there’s still a bit of a head-scratcher about their connection. The movie’s mission? Unravel the mystery that ties them together. Even though Carol and Monica first crossed paths when Rambeau was just a kid, we’re left wondering how their fates are intertwined. The grand finale? Our young superheroes joining forces to take down a brand new supervillain.

Ms. Marvel aka Kamala plays a pivotal role in kickstarting the action. A mysterious item, quite like the bangle that gave Kamala her superpowers, gets things rolling. But here’s the thing – this bangle lands in the hands of the not-so-friendly villain, Dar-Benn. Now, Dar-Benn might sound familiar to comic book buffs, but let’s get one thing straight; director Nia DaCosta has cooked up a whole new version of this character for the MCU. The only information we’ve got is that Dar-Benn is a Kree imperialist with a major grudge against Carol.

Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.'”

The Marvels Cast

Returning to the MCU are familiar faces, including Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, and Mohan Kapoor as Yusuf Khan, among others.

Newcomer Zawe Ashton (known for Velvet Buzzsaw) has been cast as the movie’s villain, Dar-Benn. Park Seo-joon, known from Parasite, might play Yan, the Prince of Aladna, but there’s no official confirmation yet. The executive producer Mary Livanos spilled the beans back in July, letting us in on the secret that Seo-joon will be a trusted ally of Carol.

The Marvels Director, Writers, & Crew

Nia DaCosta, recognized for her work in mainstream horror with the 2019 Candyman remake, serves as the director of The Marvels. The script was crafted by Nia DaCosta herself, Megan McDonnell (known for WandaVision), Elissa Karaski (from the Loki series team), and comic book veteran Zeb Wells.

The movie’s cinematography is handled by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Sean Bobbitt, who steps in for Marvel Studios DP Ben Davis. Production design is led by Cara Brower, known for Candyman, with costume designs by Lindsay Pugh (The Matrix Resurrections). Laura Karpman, who previously scored Ms. Marvel and the animated What If…? series, is responsible for the original soundtrack.

When is The Marvels Set in the MCU Timeline?

MCU timeline is like a labyrinth, but fear not, The Marvels movie is here to untangle things for you. The film picks up right where Ms. Marvel left off, so it’s like a direct continuation from the series. It’s not just that, though; it also doubles as a sequel to Captain Marvel. But here’s the thing- there’s a pretty significant time gap between the two, so you can totally enjoy The Marvels as a standalone adventure too.

Ending Notes

Stay tuned for The Marvels movie, set to be an electrifying addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it unravels its secrets and brings together beloved characters in a cosmic adventure like no other.
