The 96th Academy Awards, set to be held on 10 March 2024, reportedly will open with a Barbie musical medley.
Matthew Belloni reported Oscars organizers are considering incorporating a Barbie musical medley, possibly featuring songs from the Barbie: The Album. This decision could be driven by the success of the film, the popularity of its soundtrack, or the cultural impact of Barbie in general.
Barbie, being the highest-earning movie has officially launched it’s campaign for the Oscars. Warner Bros. confirmed they will be campaigning for the top categories such as Best Film and Best Director.
Margot Robbie, who both stars in and produces the film, stands the chance to achieve the distinction of being only the second woman ever nominated for both Best Picture and Best Actress in a single year.
In what seems like an ironic turn of events, particularly considering Barbie‘s thematic emphasis, Ryan Gosling’s Ken is garnering the most pre-Oscars recognition from various awards organizations. He is set to compete in the Supporting category, serving as the solitary representative for the film.
Setting the movie aside, Barbie: The Album has achieved significant success on its own, making a debut at #2 on the Billboard 200. Rolling Stone has even hailed it as “one of the best albums of 2023 so far.” The soundtrack album features numerous original songs, many of which have the potential to secure the film a nomination for Best Original Song. However, the musical I’m Just Ken, performed as the various Kens prepare for a pivotal moment in the movie, has emerged as a universally beloved standout.
