Jenna Ortega reportedly asked her agency to end her contract with the Scream franchise following Melissa Barrera getting fired.
Barrera, gained widespread recognition for her role in the Scream horror franchise, is no longer part of Scream 7. It is said that her remarks on the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel sparked controversy, ultimately leading to her departure from the film series.
The production company, Spyglass, released a statement confirming the news, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Barrera’s remarks that resulted in her removal from Scream 7 were, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity no water…people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
The move has faced significant backlash from fans of the Scream franchise, and it is believed that both the cast and crew of the upcoming sequel are disappointed. Director Christopher Landon tweeted, in a now-deleted post, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Social media movements like #justiceformelissabarrera and #boycottscream7 are gaining momentum. While the fans has made their sentiments clear, the reactions of other cast members are yet to be seen.
