Nicole Kidman suffers an unexpected tragedy in Lulu Wang’s limited series Expats trailer.
Wang, the director of The Farewell, takes on multiple roles in Expats, where she serves as the writer, director, and showrunner. The six-part limited series, executive produced by actress Nicole Kidman, is an adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee’s acclaimed novel The Expatriates, delving into the interconnected lives of American women in China.
The official synopsis for the show reads, “Set against the vibrant and tumultuous tapestry of 2014 Hong Kong, “Expats” centers on three American women — Margaret (Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) — whose lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy. The series interrogates privilege and explores what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred.”
Kidman’s Margaret open the trailer with these words, “I just sometimes want to be alone. Where I’m not somebody’s wife, not somebody’s mother. Where I’m not defined by tragedy.”
The series releases on 26 January on Prime Video.
