Jason Momoa allegedly came drunk on the Warner Bros. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set dressed like Johnny Depp. He also strongly advocated for Amber Heard to be removed from the role of Mera.
Variety reports that after the first Aquaman movie came out in 2018, the studio and director James Wan decided to remove Heard from the sequel because they felt she didn’t have good on-screen chemistry with Momoa.
They sent a letter to her lawyer, Karl Austen, to let him know about this decision. It’s important to note that this decision to replace Heard was not related to Depp’s legal case against her, which happened later in 2019. Some sources say that the reason for removing Heard was not really about chemistry, as she had passed a chemistry test with Momoa when she got the role of Mera, beating out other actresses.
In the end, the movie studio didn’t go through with firing Heard from the sequel because her ex-boyfriend, Elon Musk, had one of his legal representatives send a very strong letter to Warner Bros. The letter essentially threatened serious consequences if they didn’t bring Heard back for the sequel. Faced with this intense pressure, Warner Bros. decided to give in and continued with Amber Heard in the role.
It is also reported that the studio has removed two scenes featuring Heard from Aquaman 2. A scene where she fights Black Manta and another romantic scene with Momoa.
